The Black Ghosts first album is a true showing of the talents of two electronic masters: Simon Lord from Simian, and Theo Keating from The Wiseguys.
The band’s official website describes themselves as “peculiarly British noir , where the divorcee next door dreams of nocturnal visitations from predatory incubi, and an awkward boy genius tinkers with forbidden science in the garden shed. Unmanned Casio keyboards left for dead in the loft burst into requiems of their own composition, attractive cousins are murdered for what they know, and an unspeakable horror lurks in the depths of the spare room” – confused anyone?
Speaking of the album they say it tells “tales of modern gothic romance”.
The album is listed on electronic music source beatport as being of the electronica genre. But in reality its more synth-pop/rock with some electronic beats thrown in for good measure. Some tracks such as the clubbing hit Anyway you choose to give it are leaning more to the electronic house genre, while the wailing vocals on It’s your touch are more rock than electronica.
I guess that is the problem i have with this album; as individual tracks they are great and i really love listening to them on shuffle in my itunes library mixed in with other music. But listening to it as a whole album in its entirety i find myself confused to what it is exactly the album is trying to project. Yes there is the dark gothic theme of the harsh side of love but with the switching of the musical styles it somewhat gets lost. Of course this can be rather typical of this sort of British rock-esq electronic so perhaps i am being too critical.
